HARRISBURG (May 15, 2023) The Harrisburg-based Tri County Housing (formerly Tri-County Housing Development Corporation (TCHDC)) earned a prestigious Pyramid Award for its Mt. Pleasant single- family home project in Harrisburg at the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Harrisburg’s 29th Awards Dinner.
The homes earned top honors as “Best Affordable Housing—Single-Family Project” at the April 28 ceremony at Colonial Golf and Tennis Club.
The award-winning project is located on Swatara Street, spanning 15th and 16th Streets, in Harrisburg’s Mount Pleasant section. The once-blighted block has been transformed.
Gary Lenker, Executive Director of Tri County Housing, helped lead the project, which began in 2010 with a block-long makeover, and with financial support from the city, county and state, and financing from many local banks. The completion ceremony was held on January 26, 2023. Lenker, who also serves on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Housing Financing Agency (PHFA), said the new homes feature 1,600 square feet, four bedrooms, one full bath and two half- baths, rear parking, and a security system. Homeowners can apply for tax abatement under the city, county and school district, for 10 years.
“I am so honored to receive another Pyramid Award, which validates our project’s affordability, creativity and craftsmanship, but, more importantly, demonstrates our devotion to helping families in need of safe, affordable housing in the Tri-county area,” said Lenker.
Tri County Housing began as TCHDC, a Community Housing Development Organization, (CHDO) that has served Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties for 32 years. Since 1990, Tri County Housing has developed or rehabilitated more than 800 units of affordable housing, for both rent and purchase. They specialize in rehabilitation and redevelopment projects as well as new home construction. Recent successful projects include Hummel Street in the South Allison Hill neighborhood of Harrisburg, Carlisle, and Steelton.
